Getting ready to try a class at Warriors Martial Arts? That's exciting! Though sometimes we can feel a bit jittery or nervous before starting something new. And that's okay! There are a few simple strategies, kids (and their parents!) can overcome jitters and enjoy the journey. Here’s how:
Talk About It: Encourage your child to share their feelings. Let them know it’s okay to feel nervous and that it’s part of trying new things. Share your own stories of when you were nervous about starting something new and how it turned out.
Visit the Dojo: If possible, visit the dojo before the first class. Meeting the instructors and seeing the space can help your child feel more comfortable. Quite often we have families come in just to sit down and watch a class, especially families of little ones, just to help familiarise them with the environment and the people in it. And then if you're child feels comfortable to jump in and give it a try, we can certainly arrange a free trial too!
Start Small: Remind your child that they don’t need to be perfect. The first class is about trying their best and having fun. Explain that every student starts as a beginner and that it’s okay to make mistakes—that’s how we learn.
Focus on the Positive: Highlight the exciting parts of karate, like learning cool moves or ninja kicks, making new friends, and earning new coloured belts. You can also talk about the confidence and skills they’ll build along the way.
Be Supportive: Stay positive and encouraging. Celebrate small victories, like completing their first class or mastering a new technique. If your child is especially nervous, consider watching the first class from the sidelines to show your support.
Use Visualisation Techniques: Help your child picture themselves doing well in class. Visualisation can reduce anxiety and build confidence. Encourage them to imagine themselves bowing, learning new moves, and feeling proud after the class.
Karate is a confidence-building journey. With patience, encouragement, and a positive attitude, those jitters will soon transform into excitement and pride. Remember, it’s all about taking that first step! See you guys in class!
